Amsterdam

Amsterdam

verwelkomen! Did you know that Amsterdam is home to over 180 nationalities? But, its most popular resident is the bicycle, with over 881,000 bicycles spread out over the city and in its canals! Speaking of which, there are more canals in Amsterdam than there are in Venezia! This makes Amsterdam the city with the second most canals. Top honors go to Cape Coral, Florida with more than 400 miles of freshwater and saltwater canals.

The Dutch have a saying: "God created the world but the Dutch created the Netherlands.” To understand this boast, you need to understand the fact that most of the Netherlands is below sea level. Amsterdam’s lowest point lies 23 feet (7 meters) below sea level. To counter the waters of the North Sea that would engulf much of the country, a system of dikes – today, more than 1,491 miles (2,400km) – were built to protect the country.

One cannot help but notice and feel the youthful energy of Amsterdam. This comes as no surprise when you consider the demographics of the city. As noted, the city is very diverse and densely populated. When looking at age groups, the largest group are those between the ages of 25 to 45 years old. Over a third of the population of Amsterdam occupy this group. So, if you are visiting Amsterdam and find it hard to keep up with all that youthful energy, head to Vondelpark and sit and capture it all on film!
