Hong Kong

Hong Kong

歡迎! Did you know that with a large population of over 7 million, Hong Kong also has one of the densest populations in the world? The population density of Hong Kong is 16,719 people per square mile (6,451 people per square kilometer). Thanks to a highly developed transit network, getting around is not only easy, but utilized by 90% of its population.

The topography of Hong Kong is varied with hills and mountains throughout the area. Included in the area are the highest number of skyscrapers in the world and home to many of the world’s financial institutions. Still, three quarters of the city’s landmass is rural that includes parks, woodland, reservoirs, hills and coastline. With over 200 islands, the city also offers the largest fleet of ferries in the world.

On a personal note, it is easy to feel a bit claustrophobic and overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of its population and density. Making good use of its excellent ferry system allowed me to escape and enjoy quiet time on Tai O and Lamma. Due to its climate, sunsets and sunrises in Hong Kong is nothing short of magnificent. The natural haze provides an excellent filter to capture stunning images all over the city.
