Italy

Benvenuto! Did you know that Italy is just slightly larger than Arizona? And yet, at the height of the Roman Empire with its capital in Rome, it covered some 2.3 million miles (3.7 million km) or roughly two-thirds the size of the U.S. and had a population of 120 million people. But by the Middle Ages, Rome itself had no more than 13,000 residents.

Among the world’s leading personalities born in Italy are
Leonardo Da VinciGalileo Galilei, Christopher Columbus, Leonardo Fibonacci, Enzo Ferrari and Guglielmo Marconi. While many are held in some high regard, Galileo who argued that the Earth revolved around the Sun, was imprisoned in his own house by the Catholic Church. It was not until 1992 that the Church issued a formal apology.

With its multifaceted landscape and culture, Italy has inspired numerous photographic artist such as Guido Guidi, Luca Campigotto and Massimo Vitali to name just a few. However, Italy has an even greater contribution to the world of photojournalism in the 20
th century – winning the world’s highest honors in photography. But I am sure that wherever you travel in this “national masterpiece,” you will find that you may not win accolades, but you certainly will love your photos.
